The Resourceful Kansas Program

What is it?

Resourceful Kansas is funded by the Department of Energy (DOE) Better Buildings Program grant and has as its overall goal,

to engage communities throughout the state of Kansas in making a fundamental shift toward a less energy intensive, more efficient economy.

It will:

  • reduce energy consumption
  • increase efficient energy practices
  • help Kansas harvest its abundant nonpolluting wind and solar resources
  • cultivate new economic opportunities throughout the state

Participating entities will be helped by identifying and prioritizing their own energy efficiency and conservation opportunities, including integrating cost-effective renewable energy sources through:

  • targeted outreach
  • customized on-site assessments
  • project implementation support

Who is involved?

  • Riley County Public Works Department – Grant Recipient
  • GBA Architects and Engineers – Lenexa, KS
  • Kansas State University
  • Participating Organizations

How does it work?

Three key components comprise the work plan:

  • One-day Seminar: Entities across the state can apply on this website to be a participant in the Resourceful Kansas program. Participants in the Resourceful Kansas program will attend one of several seminars to be held over the course of the grant period at the Riley County Public Works facility in Manhattan, Kansa

This facility has implemented a number of energy-conserving features, sustainable elements and renewable energy resources. Participant will learn about available energy- saving technologies, public and private financing, incentives, and will see real-world examples of these practices first-hand in a model county facility.

  • Energy Assessments: Selected Resourceful Kansas participants will also receive a customized Energy Assessment, performed by GBA Architects + Engineers, which will result in tailored cost/benefit review of energy saving technologies and techniques. The Energy Assessment can be applied towards a single building or several buildings. If it's a single building the assessment will be an ASHREA Level 1 Energy Audit and a Renewable Energy Feasibility Study. If a multi-building assessment is selected by the participating entity, it will involve Energy Studies and a Renewable Energy Review that will give guidance on cost effective improvements.
Within both options, a brief transportation study will be included. Participants will have input on the proportion of time spent focused on the Energy Study/Audit, Renewable Energy Study/Review and Transportation Study.

  • Technical Assistance: The Resourceful Kansas team is available throughout the program to provide guidance and professional support to your organization to help you move through the various stages of your energy conservation, energy efficiency and renewable energy projects.
